With mid-summer fast approaching, the male members of Ross-on-Wye Golf Club are enjoying an abundance of annual major events which are scheduled to take place at this stage of the season.
While this means honours board recognition for the favoured few who emerge as trophy winners, it also provides opportunities for everyone to ‘continuously improve’ as they strive to become the best that they can be. This culture has been inspired in recent years through the influence of the Club’s Head Professional Tim Hall and his ‘School of Golf’ team with the latest results showing clearly that those members directly involved are flourishing.
With 80 entrants taking part, the medal Spring Scratch and Handicap witnessed six handicapper, Alastair Watkins, having the best gross score, with a 78, and Tim Wyatt as runner-up with an 80. 12 handicapper, Jason Skidmore, shot the best net score of the day with a 68, with Nick Swan’s equally impressive net 69 in second place, which was then followed by net 70s by Gareth Webb and 14-year-old Ross Junior, Sam Sroka. This was his best ever performance in an adult major competition.
Gary Moyle and Shaun Sturge finished with net 71s followed by net 72s from Seniors Captain, Andy Baldwin, Phil Midwinter and Richard Tromans.
Next up was the Burn Trophy with 108 taking part and a highly impressive round of 40 stableford points by teenager, seven handicapper Ted Williams. It was his first success in an adult competition to give him a well deserved win, playing his back nine holes in a remarkable one over gross par.
Ted was followed by Adrian Berry and Chris Good with 39 points, Gareth Webb maintained his consistent play with 38 points and Mike Credland and TIm Wyatt scored 36 points, with Kingsley Matthews and Rhys McGinley, another Ross Junior, enjoying 35 points rounds.
These eight players now qualify for the final knock-out stages of the 2019 Len Weston Cup, where Ted and Rhys will be doing battle against one another to reach the semi-finals and Chris Good finds himself involved in the quarter finals for the second successive season.See the full story in this week’s edition of the Ross Gazette, or subscribe to our online edition here
