Ross Golf Club’s Annual Knock-out Championship Finals day contained a healthy abundance of Seniors (Over 60) players aiming to see their names ultimately emblazoned on the various honours boards that adorn the Clubhouse lounge.

In the Seniors headline Trevor Lane Cup Final, which had 73 starters, it was fitting that two in-form players were brought together, being Arthur Reid and Peter Smith. In a keenly contested final Peter left it until the 17th hole to edge ahead of Arthur for the first time and, holding his nerve on the 18th green, it was Peter’s name that will earn the honours board recognition. The losing semi-finalists were Tim Fewell and Hugh Elliott. At the Trophy Presentation evening Peter was able to collect two trophies, having earlier in the season, with Ellie Peake, won the Bob & Mary Beavis Mixed Greensomes Salver with their highly impressive 44 stableford points score.

The Harold Bradley Cup for those men members with 18+ handicaps, in which 33 players took part resulted in two seniors going head to head in the final, being David Every and former Seniors Captain, Richard Escolme. Richard was aiming to make it 3rd time lucky having just missed out in the previous two finals and he looked to be in the ascendancy when he won the last two holes to take the match to the 19th hole. However in his typical stoic fashion, David was somehow able to regain the momentum and win the match from the jaws of defeat to deny Richard on the 19th green.

The Howard Porter mixed foursomes Trophy final with 32 sign-up pairings also produced an all seniors members final when Martin and Ruth Pimlow took on Scott Thomson and Jenny Freel. Both Scott and Jenny have enjoyed effective golfing summer seasons and this may have given them the edge as they ran out 3/2 winners.

Equally while 9 handicapper senior Derek Hancock has witnessed a good summer and will have done well to have reached the final with 87 original starters, on the day he found his more youthful opponent James Ford at his very best and it was James who ultimately completed a comfortable victory.
