At Ross-on-Wye Golf Club’s recent Annual General Meeting members duly elected Warren Moore as their Club Captain for the next 12 months and his Drive-In which followed a few days later received support from all sections.

24 teams of four members each took part in a Florida Scramble medal competition and it proved a closely contested affair with the top spot earned by Mabel Day, Tim Wyatt, Murray Thomson and Kingsley Matthews with a 61.4 score.

Matthew Hillier, Matthew Blythe, Martin Pimlow and John Sherahilo were runners-up with 62.3, leaving Paul Cresswell, Barry Norton, Robin Butler and Charles Reeve-Tucker in 3rd place with 62.4. There were also nearest the pin prizes for Lady Captain, Annette Mansie and Ralph Gallagher.

Members can look forward to a lively year in the capable care of Warren who will have Kim Hampson as his valued Club Vice Captain and the Club is also fortunate to have Doug Duncanson, whose endorsement as Club President received the AGM’s full support and encouragement.

The Ross Seniors Annual Dinner was therefore timed nicely to enable Seniors Captain, David Williams to pay a suitable tribute to their guest of honour, Club President Neville Ovens prior to him stepping down as President after completing 2 successful years in office. In proposing the toast to Ross Golf Club, Neville spoke knowledgeably about former Club President Colonel J F. Maclean who had been in office when the Ross course moved to Gorsley in 1964 and of his father who had been Club President when the Club was based at Alton Court in the early 1900s and how he had been largely responsible for the Club moving to Rudhall in 1925.

David responded to that toast and outlined how Neville had become a much loved character among members. During his 20 years with the Club, Neville had been Captain in 2004 and 2012, had been Honorary Secretary, Chairman of the Management Committee and Chaired the Sub-Committee which saw the Club through a highly successful Centenary year in 2003. He had always been a capable golfer with his name appearing on several of the Honours Boards which adorn the Clubhouse lounge, and having his highly supportive golfing wife, Jean had also been a real strength.

In responding to David’s toast to ’Our Ladies’ Ross Lady Captain, Annette Mansie spoke entertainingly and captured perfectly the spirit and liveliness of the evening, which for many years has been the highlight in the Seniors social calendar.
