The golfing gem that is the South Herefordshire Golf Club enjoyed a special day on Saturday 23rd February.
The new Men’s Section Captain, Paul Stone, started the event by announcing that Pancreatic Cancer UK will be the Captain’s charity for 2019 and the proceeds from the day would go to this deserving charity.
The event was the annual Captain’s Drive In. Paul Stone opened the golf play with the first drive off the tee, which also formed part of one of several fun competitions. This one was a ‘guess the drive’ where each participant planted a small flag on or near the fairway. The flag that the ball ended up closest to would be the winner. This was won by Colin Spencer.
The other fun competitions were nearest the pin after one shot and nearest the pin in two shots. The former was won by Martin Latham and the latter by Mike Boucher, who managed to hole his second shot.
The main event was a seeded Texas scramble. This was a close and fiercely fought team game. With the two leading teams coming in with the same score the winner had to be decided on countback.
The winning team was Simon Sharpe, Mike Boucher and Dave Cawthorne.
The day was blessed with fantastic weather with everyone in shirtsleeves.
The total sum raised for Pancreatic Cancer UK was over £400, which is a fantastic donation to the Captain’s charity.
