On Sunday, May 6th, Goodrich ’B’ashers played host to Ledbury ’C’ on one of the warmest days of the year so far. First pair Kirsten Mathews and Wendy Jenkins won their first rubber 6-2/6-2. It was not all plain sailing for the first pair but they worked well together and overcame any blips that arose.
Second pair Carolyn Riddell and Sue Harley also won their first rubber, 7-5/6-3, playing with their usual steady consistency. After a short break in the shade and a chance to top up the water bottles, the ladies returned to the courts.
In the second rubber, Kirsten and Wendy again won 6-2/6-2, a partnership that is getting stronger, with left-hander Wendy able to set Kirsten up for the winning volley on numerous occasions. Despite the heat Carolyn and Sue stretched out their second rubber when they won the first set 6-2, but dropped the second 2-6, they rallied strongly to take the third set 7-6. The ’B’ashers next match is on Tuesday, May 22nd, when they travel to Woolhope.
Earlier in the week Goodrich Men were also in action when they entertained Madley ’C’ in Division 6 of the H & W Summer League. The team, consisting of Mike Buck, Andrew Downing, Paul Terzer and Daniel Madge, took all the points after winning in straight sets and dropping only 11 games in the process. This puts them top of the division with 18 points, having already played and beaten Bodenham ’B’ on April 23rd. Their next match is on the May 14th, away to Eardisley ’B’.
On Sunday, May 13th, commencing at 3pm, Goodrich Tennis Club will be participating in the Great British Tennis Weekend, an LTA sponsored event for families, adults and kids. Go along and try tennis for free.
