On Sunday, February 11th, on a bitterly cold and windy morning, Goodrich Ladies ’A’ttitudes played hosts to the very experienced Ross Ladies ’A’ team, a side who until recently were playing in Division 2 of the H & W Winter league.

Goodrich first pair, Cheryl Mordecai and Steph Howells got off to a promising start, winning the first set 6-3, but then the Ross ladies, Brenda Saunders and Val Davies, raised their level and took the next two sets, 6-3 / 6-4.

Meanwhile Goodrich second pair, Bonnie Palmer and Wendy Jenkins, battled hard against Gaynor Raine and Jane Pepperell, but went down 1-6 / 0-6, despite many deuce points.

After the change around, again Cheryl and Steph took the first set 6-3, but Gaynor and Jane managed to level at 6-4.

In a tight third set tie-break, it was Ross who took the spoils. Second couple Bonnie and Wendy picked up more games in their second rubber against Brenda and Val, but conceded 1-6 / 4-6.

Back in the pavilion everyone agreed it had been a testing time on court, and maybe they should have just stayed in the warmth and enjoyed the beautiful chocolate cake provided by Bonnie in honour of Steph’s birthday.

Goodrich Ladies’ next home game is on Sunday, February 18th, when they will play host to Kempsey ’A’.
