Hartpury University welcomed students and scientists to the 2019 Alltech-Hartpury Conference highlighting ground-breaking equine research.

The showpiece event at Hartpury – the world’s largest equine educational establishment – featured presentations by keynote speakers Russell Guire, the founder and director of Centaur Biomechanics, and Dr Sebastian McBride, a lecturer in biological science at Aberystwyth University.

Mr Guire discussed the effect that saddle fit has on thoracolumbar kinematics, while Dr McBride highlighted the use of cognitive tests to assess normal and abnormal brain function in horses.

Students presented scientific papers that reviewed emerging research within the field of equestrian science, including the broad themes of equine behaviour and welfare, equine business management, breeding and equine nutrition.

Now in its ninth year, the Alltech-Hartpury Conference is aimed at university students and scientists interested in the application of emerging scientific and business-orientated research to enhance all aspects of the equine industry.

Hartpury is again hosting three leading competitions this year – Hartpury Festival of Dressage (3-7 July), Hartpury Showjumping Spectacular (19-22 July) and the NAF Five Star International Horse Trials (7-11 August) incorporating the Hartpury Summer Fair on the Saturday.

Next year, Hartpury will also host the 2020 FEI Dressage and Eventing European Championships for Young Riders and Juniors.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
