Kate Williams from Ross became the first player from Herefordshire to play in the national junior singles and was unlucky not to be among the winners.

Kate knew her first match was not going to be easy when she was drawn against Chloe Brett of Warboys Bowling Club, Huntingtonshire. Her father is the well known international Nicky Brett.

The game was initially very tight with both girls bowling some very good woods. Chloe tried to lengthen the jack several times but kept putting the jack in the ditch. Kate made full use of these failings and in the end ran out a comfortable 21-9 winner.

In the last sixteen she was drawn against Caroline Davies (Lincolnshire). The game was proceeding very evenly, Kate's opponent was using narrow line woods and these were keeping Kate under pressure. Half way through the game Kate dropped a four but bounced back by picking up two on each of the following two ends.

On what turned out to be the last end of the competition Kate bowled three woods within three inches of the jack to make the score 20-18 if she could hold them. The Lincolnshire player then bowled the wood of the match by sending up a running wood to take the jack into the ditch for game.

Kate was again unlucky with her last wood, just failing to reach to save the game. The final score was 21-15 to Caroline.
