The British Rowing National Championships, for veteran rowers, was held at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham on Sunday May 20th. This event, which is always very competitive, proved that Ross Rowing Club is still one of the more successful clubs in the UK.
The Men's coach, Malcolm Pobjoy, witnessed all his rowers winning medals for the fourth year in succession. The Masters C Eight defended their 2011 crown by winning Gold against Nottingham and York.
Coxed by Morgan Baynham-Williams, the crew of Dave Sykes, Lenny Colling, Anthony Dixon-Gough, Philip Davies, Steve Randell, Paul Brodholt, Graham Watling and Paul Carpenter powered into a lead over Nottingham and held a good margin for the remainder of the 1000m course.
This was particularly satisfying for some members of the crew who, earlier that day, had felt they had under-performed in their Masters C coxed four final which was won by Monmouth.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Masters B pair of Lenny Colling and Laurence Morgan won Silver behind a London crew from Lea. Lenny then repeated that result in the Masters B coxed four, with Philip Davies, Steve Randell and Anthony Dixon-Gough which contributed to his very impressive personal haul of three medals in his first appearance at these championships.
Four other crews from Ross – a ladies' quadruple and double scull, a men's four, and a mixed double – all rowed well, but found the competition too fast for any further medals.
