Nine junior crews made the long journey from Ross to Peterborough Junior Championships on Saturday to take part in this important event in the junior rowing calendar. Again, it was a successful trip, with the rowers coming back with four medals, three of which were silver.
The WJ14 quad of Katie Smith, Ellie Lown, Emily Hermon, Heidi Brodholt and Al Green (cox) came second in the final to a strong crew from Headington School, losing by one length in one of their final warm-up races before the National Championships in three weeks’ time. A second WJ14 quad of Lucy Burden, Mia Davies, Lydia Parker, Niamh Hickey and Katie Hermon (cox) came third in the second quad event, which was a superb achievement given the inexperience of some crew members. Heidi Brodholt won silver in a very strong WJ14 single scull event, and Jayesh Punn sculled heroically to hold on to second place in his single scull event.
To put the icing on the cake on what was a memorable day at these championships, the Ross Juniors again won a special award for “Outstanding Watermanship”, with Heidi Brodholt being voted as the technically best sculler of the hundreds of competitors from up and down the country.
Whilst the juniors were in Peterborough, some of the senior rowers were competing at Ironbridge Regatta. The coxless pair of Graham Watling and Dave Sykes continued their winning ways with yet another victory to add to the several they have already won this year. All in all, a great weekend for Ross Rowing Club.
