Taking advantage of the glorious weather a massive field of 145 male members of Ross Golf Club recently took part in the latest major medal event being the Spring Scratch and Handicap. For the day's two ultimate competition winners Nick Ellis and Nigel Evans, they were both able to experience the satisfaction of returning in style to the golf course that they once knew. In the case of Nick Ellis, he has only been away for a relatively short period to test him himself on the Professional circuit. In now recovering his Amateur status and with a 3 handicap Nick was able to card an impressive gross 74 round to win the Scratch event and relive memories of when, as a teenager, his name regularly topped the Club's final competition score-sheets. On this occasion, after an indifferent start, he managed birdies at each of the courses three par 5 holes and this recovery kick-started a run of 8 consecutive pars on his back 9 holes. In winning the event by 2 shots Nick saw his handicap reduce to 2.3 to inspire himself further in a great start to his summer season. For 24 handicapper Nigel Evans, his nett 68 made him the top performer in the handicap division and will see him now playing off a 22 handicap. Nigel's relationship with the Ross Club goes back some 17 years having re-joined just recently following the closure of the Belmont GC in Hereford, and not surprisingly after this success he described his move as a 'breath of fresh air'.
