Many of the Ross sports teams enjoyed success this weekend.
FOOTBALL
Chris Swailes became the oldest player to score at new Wembley as Morpeth Town came from behind to claim a 4-1 victory over Hereford in a thrilling FA Vase final. The 45-year-old – who has had to overcome heart surgery in his remarkable career – ironically chested in the Morpeth equaliser, after Rob Purdie had fired Hereford ahead after just 75 seconds, on his way to earning the man-of-the-match award.
GOLF
THE annual Saxons v Celts "Ryder Cup" event was reduced to a singles competition for the South Herefordshire Golf Club because of the adverse weather conditions on the 1st day of the scheduled event. There were 52 participants and the captains, Fred Cook & Malcolm Connah, began the proceedings in a very friendly manner halving their match.
THE latest major events in Ross Golf Club’s 2016 men’s programme have produced some fine performances with the Club’s Gorsley based tree-lined course playing at its longest and providing a real test for everyone. The annual Spring Scratch and Handicap medal attracted 130 entrants and a special feature was that the best gross performer of the day being 5 handicapper, Tim Wyatt also proved to be the best nett performer as well.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
A group of boys from the Forest High School recently took part in the Year 7 and 8 district mountain biking competition held at both Newent School and Forest High over the last few weeks. The boys involved raced over both courses competing against the likes of Newent, Dene Magna, and Lakers.
TENNIS
Ross Tennis Centre’s Ladies A team played their first summer match against Droitwich A on Sunday, May 15th.
This year will be a difficult season having moved up to Division One in the Hereford and Worcester Leagues at the end of last summer. A perfect dry day put everyone in an effervescent mood.
CRICKET
Alistair Cook turned out for Ross U15s at a recent match against Wormelow. Cook won the match for the Ross side, with a virtuoso batting display. Spectators could be forgiven for thinking this was THE Alistair Cook, England captain, such was the dominance he displayed – and all from an U13 playing two years above his age group.
CYCLING
Royal Dean Forest Cycling club’s own Dave Pearce won the event from James Moverley and Adam Taylor with a personal best time for the course of 23:25, on a breezy night. James took 2nd place from Adam by just 1 second.
