Ross entertained high flying Old Colstonians at Greytree for the latest round of league matches. Before kick off a minute’s silence was held for former Club President Bill Davis a great friend to Ross Rugby Club.
At kick off Ross won the ball with a great take and thirty metre run by second row Chris Price, Price offloaded to Tim Hanks who gained another fifteen metres to set up a scrum for Ross.
The ball was won by the Ross pack, a quick ball by the scrum half found Dan Field draw his opposite number then pass to Marcus Ballinger to score an unconverted try in the corner. With only five minutes gone Ross couldn’t have asked for a better start.
Old Colstonians rallied after this early set back but stout defence by Price, Tilling and Morgan kept the opposition out. After a wave of attacks Ross fell foul with an off side and Colstonians were awarded penalty in front of the ross posts which was missed.
Ross regrouped and a penalty was awarded to Ross with Thai Hayward converting to make the score 8 - 0.
With halftime approaching Colstonians put some phases of play togeather and after initial good defence Ross were penalised for off side. Old Colstonians converted the penalty to bring the half time score to 8 - 3.
Ross started the second half very shoddily and were quick to concede another penalty to bring the score to 8 - 6. After 10 minutes of to-ing and fro-ing Ross steped up the pressure.
A great turn over and clearout by Ben Element and Henry Tilling released the ball to Price who quickly passed to fleet footed prop Dave Green who made 15 metres before unloading to Dan Field to score. Hayward converted to make the score 15 - 6.
With five minutes left Old Colstonians piled on the pressure. Breaking through on one occasion for what seemed a certain try, but some great last ditch defending by Element and Marshall kept Ross with a healthy lead. This was the last action of what was a very physical and enjoyable encounter and pushed Ross back up to third in the league.
Tilling was in line for this week’s Man of the Match for great work in the lineout and general play but for 80 minutes non-stop action in defence and attack, Chris Price took the award.
On Saturday Ross 2nds are in action at Greytree in a Merit Table clash. All support is greatly appreciated.
