Ross preserved their unbeaten start to their league campaign registering win number three as they comfortably saw off Kingswood 48-5.
The lunchtime downpour had cleared by the 3pm kick-off and the sun came out. The crowd were treated to a running rugby first half try fest as Ross ran the visitors ragged. Fullback Huw Bellamy opened the scoring within five minutes, after some great inter-passing between Nathan Cocker, Thai Hayward and Dan Field saw the final inside pass to Huw, who touched down unopposed. Within minutes Ross were further ahead as winger, Nathan Cocker finished off another great three quarters move to score. It was one way traffic with the game barely ten minutes old when flanker, Gavin Oates crossed to score and Ross were already 19-0 up with Aaron Ryder converting two of the three scores.
Kingswood tried to bring their big ball carriers into the game but the Ross defence was tight and Kingswood could not put any pace into their game. Ross just waited for their errors. It was ironic that Ross’s next score came from Kingswood pressure and territory deep in the Ross twenty two. A great Ross scrum saw Aaron Ryder clear the danger to touch on the Ross ten metre line. Jake Christopher stole the Kingswood lineout and a beautiful box kick from Ben Element was caught by Dan Field who outpaced the stunned Kingswood defence to score, putting Ross 24-0 ahead.
Kingswood tried to find a way back via the scrum but the Ross front row of Josh Element, Loius Morgan and Jonnie Baynham held firm, and the next score wasn’t long in coming. A great take from Josh Walker, at a lineout ten yards from the visitors line set up a maul. Kingswood initially repelled it but hooker Josh Element broke from the back of the maul and crashed over to score, putting Ross 29-0 ahead.
With halftime looming Ross added another score. Again some great hands put Gavin Oates in the clear and his try saw Ross go in at half time 34-0 ahead.
Ross started the second half as they had the first. After captain Casey Morgan bumped off two tackles the ball was moved quickly left. The Kingswood defence was left tackling shadows and Gavin Oates’s inside pass saw Josh Element score under the posts. Aaron added the two and Ross were 41-0 ahead. With both Chris Price and Casey Morgan now busting big holes in the visitors’ defence the next score was not far away. From a scrum, 40 yards out, the ball was moved quickly and accurately right and a well timed pass from centre, Thai Haward put winger, Marcus Barnard into space.
He had far too much pace for the cover defence and scored under the posts. Aaron added the two and with 25 minutes remaining Ross were 48-0 ahead.
Ross were unable to maintain the pace and tempo from the first three quarters and errors crept in. The game slowed into a scrum to lineout procession which suited Kingswood, and on the last play of the game their big number eight crashed over to get them on the scoreboard, giving the final score Ross 48 Kingswood 5.
It was difficult to single out a man of the match as every player contributed, with the objective of moving the ball, so for this week Ross-on-Wye is team of the match. This week Ross are away to Painswick, a 3pm kick off.
