The league match between Ross-on-Wye RFC 2nds and Berry Hill was postponed, so Ross took the opportunity to play a friendly away game to Tewkesbury 2nds, and the team were delighted when they came away with a victory, winning 24-10.
The Ross team started well, although from the first they sustained pressure from Tewkesbury. Tewkesbury scored from a five metre scrum, pick up and drive.
Ross soon got on the score sheet with slick hands in awful conditions which enabled No 8 TC Leach to score.
Winger Thai Hayward doubled Ross’ lead, having the pace to beat his opposite number and dive into the corner.
Just before the break, the fly-half kicked from his own half and the persuing chase saw Ben Element kick further on. Sam Griffiths gathered just short of the line and he offloaded to centre Pete Jarvis to score. Thai Hayward converted.
The second half saw the ball kept mostly with the forwards as conditions worsened to the extent you couldn’t tell which team was which on a mud bath of a pitch.
Tewkesbury managed another unconverted try before Ross got the final try with the last play of the match, again from winger Thai Hayward who used his strength and power to force himself over the line. He brushed himself off to convert.
This week, Ross 2nds are at home to Chosen Hill 3rds, weather permitting. The Drop Inn man of the match was awarded to second row, Dave Mince.
