NEWENT RFC have appointed Rob West as the club's new Phoenix head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season, with the former player hoping to guide the side to back to back promotions.

West is no stranger to the Phoenix set up, having been part of the squad that enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, winning the Gloucester District League title and reaching the Junior Cup final to earn promotion to Counties 4 Tribute Ale Gloucestershire North for the new season.

His rugby journey began in Bahrain before he returned to the UK with his family and joined Winchester Rugby Club. He later moved to Gloucestershire to study and has continued to develop both as a player and coach.

Away from Newent, West is currently studying for a Masters degree in Strength and Conditioning at Hartpury University, where he also coaches the Hartpury BUCS Senior 5s side.

His first season in coaching at Hartpury proved a successful one after leading the team to promotion, and Newent will be hoping he can repeat that achievement with the Phoenix as they prepare for life in Counties 4 Tribute Ale Gloucestershire North.

The appointment is part of the club's preparations for the new campaign as they look to build on last year's success and continue developing players within the senior section.

Speaking after taking on the role, West said he was excited by the challenge ahead.

"Looking forward to going for back to back promotions," he said.

The Phoenix side will enter the new season with confidence after last year's league title triumph, but face a fresh test against stronger opposition following promotion into Counties 4 Tribute Ale Gloucestershire North.

Club officials believe West's recent coaching success, combined with his understanding of the squad and links with Hartpury, make him well placed to help the team continue its progress.
