After the long Christmas break Ross took a strong squad of 21 players to Berry Hill last Saturday. They were looking to shake off any rustiness before a run of league games from January 14th.
Ross was the most cohesive team from the whistle, minimising errors and most importantly, showing great discipline. They did not concede their first penalty until the 38th minute of the game. With no easy possession or territory Berry Hill found it difficult to make any headway. It was Ross who dominated the first half, running in three excellent tries from debutant Kurt Pearce after some slick handling, Louis Morgan after some dynamic approach work from the forwards and Josh Element, who again benefitted from a great catch and drive from a lineout. At 17-0 up it looked like a near perfect first half but on the stroke of halftime Berry Hill struck back with a try of their own, to go in at halftime Berry Hill 5 Ross 17.
The score seemed to galvanise the hosts who had the better of the next quarter, scoring another try, and with the conversion Berry Hill were within five points of Ross.
It looked like game on for the final quarter, however Ross re-grouped and again some great endeavour and handling saw two great tries. The first was scored by Gavin Oates, wide out on the left, then Huw Bellamy, who was wide out on the right. This took Ross 27-12 ahead. A last minute try brought the final score to Berry Hill 17 Ross 27. Ross were the deserved winners after an excellent first half display.
On Saturday, January 14th Ross are back in league action at Greytree against Cheltenham CS, a 2.30pm kick off, so come on down and support your local team.
