It was a difficult week for Ross-on-Wye Rugby Club, as the week marked the first anniversary of Ollie Floyd’s tragic passing, but the players responded brilliantly by running in a ten-try rout of Aretians, and putting themselves back in the hunt for a third placed league finish in April.
Both pitches at Greytree looked fabulous; the sun was shining and a large crowd was able to watch Ross 1sts and 2nds play simultaneously, and they were treated to a try-fest, as the teams ran in nineteen tries between them.
A minute-long applause was held at the start of the 1sts match, in honour of their late teammate, Ollie Floyd.___
Ross-on-Wye 1sts - 62 / Aretians - 7
Ross took no time at all to hit their straps. From the off they played with tempo and skill and it wasn’t long before the tries came. Jordan Marshall opened Ross’s account, getting on the end of some slick passing, then Dave Green added another after some battering runs from the forwards.
The visitors did their best to stem the tide, but Ross had too much ball and too many attacking options. Captain, Casey Morgan added a third and centre, Dan Field danced through a gap in midfield to add a fourth. On half time lock, Jake Christopher’s great support play after a mazy Jordan Marshall run was rewarded as he took the final pass, before running in the try from the visitors’ twenty two metre line. After a few beers back at the Drop Inn, this was widely remembered as a 60 metre gallop.
Half time gave the visitors some respite, but the second half went much the same as the first. With Ross regularly running in tries, Casey Morgan bagged another two for his hat-trick. Jordan Marshall added one as did Dan Field, with number eight Cambell also getting on the score sheet. Aretians did get on the score sheet later on but the game had been one way traffic throughout and Ross ran out worthy 62-7 winners.
The Ross-on-Wye man of the match for a great all round performance was Dave Green.
On the adjoining pitch, Ross 2nds were not to be outdone, running in nine of their own tries in a 52-12 win over local rivals Westbury. ___
