The Ross-on-Wye Rowing Club rowers have been out and about over the past few weeks competing at some of the most important national events.
In early March, three crews took part in the Women’s Eights Head of the River in London along with 320 women’s eights from around the country. A novice crew made up entirely of those new to rowing completed the course and finished in 281st place, followed by a more experienced masters crew who came in 211th place. A young composite crew made up of rowers from Ross, Hereford and AB Severn came in 114th place. All crews were very pleased with their performances in this iconic women’s sporting event.
The following weekend saw the Ross junior rowers competing in the West Midlands Championships, an event held at Worcester RC which seeks to identify the fastest crews in the region to represent it at national level. Ross came away with 13 medals, 7 of which were Gold – a great haul for the club and confirmation of the continued success being achieved by local youngsters taking up the sport.
Last weekend, the WJ16 squad competed in the Schools’ Head of the River in London over 7km. The eight came 8th in their category and impressed with the fluidity of their rowing. The same eight girls then split down into Quadruple Sculls the following day to compete at the Olympic venue, Dorney Lake, in the Junior Sculling Head. One of the crews managed 7th place in a highly competitive field of over 30 crews. They were joined by an enthusiastic and technically excellent WJ14 Octo crew, who rowed superbly to secure 10th place out of 25 crews – a very encouraging result.
Ross Rowing Club continues to introduce large numbers of local children and adults to the sport of rowing through its Junior Camps and senior Discover Rowing courses. The Junior Easter Camp runs for 5 days from 4th April (contact [email protected]), and the next senior Discover Rowing course starts on 1st April (contact [email protected]).
