There was quite a stir of excitement at Ross Golf Club last week when the prestigious Gordon Blake Cup, donated to the ladies section in 1908, was won in fine style by thirteen year old Sophie Price. The cup was eagerly contested by 66 ladies but in order to comply with the rules of the competition Sophie had to forgo her junior handicap of 43 and play off 36. However, this did not stop her from shooting an amazing 7 under par round and give her the winning score of a nett 66. Her round included chipping in on the 18th for a par 4 and sinking a long putt on the par 5, 8th for a birdie. Sophie who first picked up a golf club at the age of six is an inspiration for any youngsters looking to take up the sport and the ladies section are delighted with her success. The runners up in the competition with very creditable scores of 72 nett were Sheila Curtis (2nd) and Julia Wilde (3rd) on count back. In other news on the same day the over 70's ladies played a gross competition which was won by Jean Ovens with a score 94.

The ladies open AMAM, played in glorious sunshine, attracted a large field of 160 players from all parts of the region. The winning team comprised of Pat Aprile and Belinda Rouse both from Stratford Oaks Golf Club and Jo Fisher and Val King from Redditch Golf Club. The team accumulated an excellent score of 88 points with Val King also securing the additional accolade of being nearest the pin on the 12 hole.
