Walford Timber Ltd Ross 10k and Fun Runs, in aid of Acorns, was cancelled last Sunday due to flooding of the course.

On Saturday morning, when organisers started preparing the site, there was little sign of what was to come. However, it became clear that some parts of the course near the Wye could become dangerous. Efforts were made to find alternative routes away from the river. Because so much work had gone into promoting the event, organisers were reluctant to call it off in case conditions improved. By 6pm the river had risen further and there was only one decision to make. With over 170 runners registered to take part, and more anticipated to register on the day, the next two and a half hours were spent contacting every runner, either by phone or email, to prevent wasted journeys. Fortunately this was successful and only two ladies who had registered – who hadn't read their emails – turned up on Sunday morning. This didn't deter them, however. They were so taken with the area that they still wanted to run and were advised of alternative, albeit on road routes, away from the river. Although the postponement is extremely disappointing, the runs will be re-scheduled for later in the year. George Horder, aged 80, had registered for his second Ross 10k, but this time even he would have been pipped to being the oldest contestant by Alan Watt, aged 82. It is hoped that both gentlemen will be able to take part next time.

News on the re-arranged runs will be announced on http://www.rossonwye4acorns.co.uk">www.rossonwye4acorns.co.uk and through the Ross Gazette.
