Motorist and motorcyclist killed in Saturday morning crash

An accident on the notorious A49 left two men dead and a woman fighting for life last Saturday.

The 90-year old male driver of a car was pronounced dead at the scene while the 36-year old rider of a motor cycle was rushed to Hereford County Hospital but died shortly after from the injuries he received. The 87-year old wife of the car driver, who occupied the front passenger seat, was airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the road traffic collision which occurred at 10.20am on Saturday, October 25th.

A red Ducati motor cycle travelling south towards Ross was in collision with a silver Suzuki Wagen R motor car which was emerging from the junction to the rider's nearside at the junction of the A49 and Laskett Lane, Cross Collar (immediately south of Much Birch) in Herefordshire.

All the emergency services attended the scene, together with an Emergency Doctor. The road was closed for several hours whilst police collision investigators examined the scene in an effort to determine the cause of the crash.

The two dead men have not yet been named at this stage as post-mortem examinations have still to be carried out. The Coroner will be informed and is expected to open and adjourn an inquest later in the week.

Police are anxious to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the collision at the junction or who may have seen either the motorcycle on the A49 or the silver Suzuki car on Laskett Lane immediately prior to the crash. Anyone who has information is urged to contact PC Simon Lantos of the Roads Policing Team at Hereford Police Station on 08457 444888.
