Ross-on-Wye Beacon shines bright
THE Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire, Edward Harley has praised the Ross community for putting on a moving spectacle for VE Day and for the town in supporting it.
During his speech, prior to lighting the Beacon at The Prospect on the 80th anniversary of VE Day, he said: “The town knows how to stage big ceremonial events such as this.
“I would like to thank Ross-on-Wye Town Council for hosting this event in the Prospect and St Mary’s Church for the service held prior to this ceremony.
“I’ve heard from several young people that the presentation at the church has given them a greater understanding about the Second World War and VE Day.
“It’s an honour to be here in Ross as I know the town puts a lot of effort into celebrating these occasions. VE Day on its 80th anniversary, is a huge celebration with the mayor speaking very movingly about it.
“It is right that we remember those who didn’t come back, and the memorial here testifies that. Equally we must remember those who did return.
“We all have a direct link with the Second World War demonstrated by the number of cadets present, many of whom are the same age as those that went to fight in the war.
“I’d like to conclude by thanking the Ross community rising to the challenge putting on such a wonderful spectacle, on days such as this, which have a national importance, and has been supported by the whole town.”
