The Ross Gazette has been inundated with letters regarding the planning applications proposing to set up a new soft fruit growing business at Llangarron using polytunnels.
The series of planning applications, which are all linked under number P173774/F are based at Biddlestone Orchards near Llangarron. The plans are for polytunnels, a storage unit, accommodation for up to 240 seasonal workers, a pump house and a new access road. The development is proposed to extend the soft fruit growing facilities at the site and will include lagoons to deal with excess water to offset concerns about flooding.
Work to improve the main access will be carried out and other access points will be closed, and landscaping will be introduced.
The applicants say that the use of Spanish polytunnels and table top growing systems will reduce the need for chemicals, minimise water usage, reduce water run off and increase yields, while at the same time making it easier for the fruit to be picked. The area within the polytunnels will be uncovered for part of the year and can be easily removed and once taken away leave no trace on the landscape.
An action group has been set up with a Facebook page called Polytunnel Action Group Biddlestone Orchards. They are providing template letters for people who wish to object to the application. Several similar letters have been sent to the Gazette, however the planning committee at Herefordshire Council will only take notice of those letters sent directly to them.
Comments regarding the applications should be made online at www.herefordshire.gov.uk
Several letters supporting the application have also been lodged, the reasons for supporting the application include employment opportunities and investment and economic benefits. There is also an expectation that the work will improve the problems with flooding,
Comments have also been made on social media in support of the application and it has been pointed out by numerous commentators that the farmer is responding to consumer demand.
Consultation on the application started on December 1st and closes on January 30th. A decision is expected to be reached by February 22nd.
