Businesses in Fownhope have been decimated by the recent floods, not from the water entering their premises but because of the road closures which have followed.

There has been a considerable impact on the village following the closure of the B4224 following a landslide three weeks ago. The road is closed at Fiddlers Green, between Fownhope and Mordiford, and traffic has reduced to such a degree that Fownhope businesses are suffering enormous losses.

However, the village, which is home to many thriving businesses, is still easily accessible from Ross. The road to Fownhope is perfectly adequate but it is eerily silent as very few vehicles make their way through.

The landlady of the New Inn, Sandra Gummery, told the Ross Gazette that she is very worried.

“We are approaching our busy season, with Mother’s Day and Easter coming up,” she said. “We just don’t know how long the roads will be closed.”

The manager of the Green Man, Mike Lowe, said the impact of the road closure had been massive, but admitted the diversions do not add very much time on to

journeys.

These diversions are however causing their own issues, as vehicles are unable to pass in some places which means vehicles have to reverse frequently.

A meeting took place on Monday, March 2 between village residents, the parish council, Herefordshire Council (HC) and Balfour Beatty.

A spokeperson for the parish council told the Ross Gazette that they were assured by HC that they are committeed to undertake the necessary works as a priority.
