A SUPPORT group has been established in Ross on Wye for those affected by cancer, writes Shanya Jacobs.
The Ross Cancer Support Group, based in the St Mary’s Church Hall, hold regular meeting and events inviting anyone affected by cancer, including, patients, carers, family and friends alike.
Established in 2016, the support group offers a non-discriminatory environment to support those affected. Its mission is to create a sense of community for those whose life has been impacted by cancer as well as ensuring that no-one in the town or local areas faces cancer alone.
The chairman, Paul Baker, having worked for many years in the cancer field was encouraged by the Macmillan Information Centre at Hereford County Hospital to set up a cancer support group to serve the local community.
The group describes its last few months as being very busy continuing its mission to attract new members to the volunteer group from the local area.
The support group offers a newsletter that allows anyone interested to stay up to date on upcoming meetings, events, news, and ways to get involved.
Upcoming events include a support program in Morrisons supermarket June 14, wherein the store has given the group space in the foyer to provide information and support to local people with cancer. They intend to use this space to make the local people aware of what they offer so that individuals can benefit from its services.
Following this there will also be an informal meeting at local coffee shop Esca. The support group intends on creating a coffee club that provides an opportunity for a relaxed and informal way for anyone affected.
The group ideally wishes to use these events to highlight what support is most needed in the area and gather feedback on the services and sessions so far.
