A Ross pub, which last year was being considered by Ross Town Council as a Community Asset is now having its licence investigated by Herefordshire Council.

PC?Richard Barradale-Smith told Ross Town Council, on Monday, July 11th, that the police have received complaints about noise in New Street and Jim Mooney of the licensing authority is investigating,

A resident of New Street, told the Councillors that there are a number of issues affecting residents. She said that she was speaking on behalf of ten households in New Street. She said that the problems include after hours drinking, appalling language, noise, even fighting and threatening behaviour.

She added that environmental health officers have been monitoring noise levels from neighbouring properties.

She said that the hours the pub is open are too long for a residential street and she hoped that the Town Councillors would support the residents if there is a review of the licence.

Councillor Jane Roberts suggested that this should be referred to the Planning Committee and this was agreed.

After the meeting the Ross Gazette spoke to the landlord of the Horse and Jockey, Michael Hudson. He has been managing the pub since December but took over as landlord in March.

He said that they keep to the licensed hours and appreciates that the pub is getting busier but that is because local people support it. He said:?“I have barred a few trouble makers and I ask people to use the smoking shelter in the garden rather than the street but I cannot be held responsible for what people do in the street.”

He added that he has been putting a lot of hard work into making the Horse and Jockey a clean place to come into. He said:?“People are getting to know me and I want the pub to be part of the community.”
