Pupils and staff at Gorsley Goffs Primary School were recently pleased to welcome James Mugenyi from Kisiki College in Namutumba, Uganda.

James has visited the school before. During assembly, James told everyone that Gorsley Goffs School is a special place to his family, especially his daughter, Prisca; she was a pupil at St Michael’s School; Gorsley’s link school. Over the years, Gorsley Goffs has raised money in various ways to help St Michael’s School to develop.

James spent some time in Acorn Class telling them what it was like in Uganda when he was a little boy. He said he couldn’t go to school until his hand and arm reached over his head to touch his ear; he was six when he went to school. He walked two kilometres to school every day without shoes. In fact, James said he didn’t have his first decent pair of shoes until he was 14 years old.

He told the school that he was one of 11 children and had to share a bedroom with his siblings. James said today all the children at St Michael’s School wear shoes, uniform and they all start at the age of six, even if they are not tall enough.

The children asked James many questions about his home life, for example; Does he have a number on his door? Does he take sandwiches to school? What does he eat for breakfast? Has he got any animals?

Acorn Class really enjoyed having James in their class.
