Local residents, married couple Paul and Jan Van-Goodwin, who have lived in Ross-on-Wye for over 15 years, have been busy brightening up an old flower pot in the patio garden of Costa in Ross-on-Wye.

Paul, who is currently living with and undergoing treatment for pancreatic and liver cancer, told the Ross Gazette that he visits Costa most days for a coffee and a chat, and wanted to leave something behind for the enjoyment of others. He decided this would be in the form of bright and beautiful flowers.

The idea came to Paul when he noticed the old and unused planting box, filled only with dirt and waste. He told the Ross Gazette that he was inspired through his enjoyment of making conversation with stranger, and meeting new friends every day.

Paul said: “I have met so many interesting people just from being sat in Costa with a coffee. I will talk to anyone - you never know who you might meet.”

Paul hopes to get a plaque made for the planter that reads: ‘Strangers are friends we haven’t yet met’, which he hopes will not only make people smile but will also encourage them to talk to others and not be afraid to strike up a conversation with strangers.

Paul bought the flowers locally and began planting them with his wife on Thursday, July 8th, and says he will continue to look after the plants on the patio. He told the Ross Gazette that when he is no longer around to care for them anymore, he hopes other people will feel welcome to water the plants, or even add their own flowers.

“I just hope people will enjoy it. I want it to brighten up peoples’ day.”See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
