Young classical organist Laurence John, of Ross, is set to hit the highest note of his life when he plays at one of the world’s most iconic venues, Westminster Abbey.
Laurence, 20 and a student at Oxford University, is to accompany the choir of The Queen’s College, where he is currently organ scholar and reading for a music degree, at the Abbey’s Eucharist this evening (Wednesday, August 15th).
He said: “Very few organists with visiting choirs are allowed to play for a service at Westminster Abbey, normally the Abbey’s own organist’s play, so to be considered good enough to accompany The Queen’s College Choir is a real thrill. What a privilege and an honour.
“Although I have played the organ on quite a number of very big occasions at Hereford Cathedral, when I was the organ scholar there in 2016-17, my invitation to play at Westminster Abbey elevates the prestige – and the pressure – to an altogether different level.”
By an unusual coincidence, local music lovers will have a rare opportunity to hear Laurence on Saturday, August 18th, when he gives an ‘encore performance’ of works by some of the world’s greatest composers at St Mary’s Parish Church in Ross.
Laurence, while still at school in 2015, became probably the youngest organist in the church’s 700-year history, is to return for his second summer organ recital.
The occasion will be in aid of The Friends of St. Mary’s helping to finance remedial work necessary to maintain the fabric of the ancient and iconic church.
Admission to the recital, which begins at 7pm, is by ticket, available at the door, or, in advance, from Pots and Pieces, High Street, Ross. The price is £10, which includes interval wine.
