TWO farmers who put the crunch on the nation’s big name crisp producers by launching their own brand four years ago are celebrating two appearances on TV.
Sean Mason and Mark Green hatched a plan over a pint and a bag of crisps to turn their own Peterstow potatoes into the crunchy snack in 2018.
And their Two Farmers taste of Herefordshire artisan crisps, complete with 100 per cent compostable packets, has seduced the tastebuds of the likes of TV food expert Gregg Wallace, who featured their Little Pengethley Farm business on BBC2’s Inside the Factory last month.
Last week, they were in front of the cameras again, this time appearing in an episode of We Are England on BBC 1 West Midlands and East Midlands.
With flavours like Hereford bullshot; salt and Two Farmers cider vinegar, lightly salted, and Hereford hop cheese and onion, their hand-cooked crisps celebrate local ingredients whilst causing minimal impact to the environment.
Sean said: “As farmers living and working in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside we have seen first-hand the impact plastic waste can have on the environment.
“We are also crisp lovers and our greatest challenge has been to make great-tasting crisps and find a way to bring them to market without compromising on our principles.
“We have also been keen to source as many of the ingredients from our own farm as we can, or from local suppliers.
“Even the salt we use in our lightly salted variety is sourced from neighbouring Worcestershire, where Droitwich Salt harvest their natural salt springs using renewable energy.”
Ahead of featuring on Inside the Factory, the duo posted: “Greg Wallace heads to the biggest tortilla chip factory in Europe to discover the nation’s favourite triangle-shaped snack.
“As part of this episode, we were thrilled to be asked to be included and welcome Cherry Healey to our Herefordshire based-production unit to discover the science behind our compostable crisp packets - a groundbreaking UK first!
“We are so excited for you to see how our planet loving packets are made!”
Then last Wednesday, they were on telly again on We are England talking about the challenges facing farmers.
They posted beforehand: “Discover our journey to becoming the UK’s first plastic-free packaging crisp brand and how we’ve spent the last few years developing a brand of crisps with sustainability running through its core.
“We are always looking forward, and ensuring the farm is viable for generations to come is so important to us.
“The episode will air on BBC1 West Midlands and East Midlands only, but don’t worry as those outside the region can catch up on iPlayer after the show has aired.
“Get your snacks at the ready, tune in and don’t forget to let us know what you think…”
The firm says: “Only the finest potatoes make their way into our crisp packets. We grow Lady Claire, Lady Rosetta and Taurus varieties because of their excellent fry colour and high quality.
“All of our potatoes are graded on our farm which keeps our road miles low.
“We grow, harvest, store, cook and pack our crisps. We maintain control throughout each process to ensure you receive the finest end product.
“We are committed to giving back to the environment, which is why we keep our road miles low and use 100 per cent compostable packaging.
“Our aim is to promote Herefordshire as a county of outstanding agricultural achievement.”
