The parents of teenager Lauren Hughes, who died following an asthma attack, Pat and Dolly Hughes, accepted a cheque for £1,200 from Ross Juniors FC recently, which they have donated to Phoenix Bereavement Support Services.
The money was raised thanks to a football event organised by Mike Tompkins, where a nine hour marathon of football was played between Ross Juniors FC and Monmouth Town FC in August.
All of the boys playing, from Ross, contributed through their match fees and sponsorship, with Lauren's cousin, Bailey Field, raising the most money.
Boots, the chemists, also generously agreed to donate a significant sum to the event.
When Tina Harris from Phoenix Bereavement Support Services received the cheque, she thanked the Hughes family and Ross Juniors for their support. She said that for such a small charity this donation would make a real difference to many local families.
At the same time as the cheque presentation a bench was presented to the Hughes family in memory of Lauren.
The football club think a great deal of the Hughes family and felt it only fitting to place a memorial to Lauren at the Sports Centre. The extended Hughes family were all in attendance as were the members of the football team, Lauren's brother, Liam, plays for.
