The Dowager Countess of Darnley CVO, CstJ, JP has been admitted as Honorary Freewoman of the county of Herefordshire. 

The award ceremony took place on Thursday, December 14 during a special Chairman’s Reception event marking 25 years of Herefordshire council. 

This lifetime title is the greatest honour Herefordshire council has in its power to bestow on any individual resident. It was made in recognition of Lady Darnley’s work as the Lord-Lieutenant, Her Majesty’s representative in Herefordshire.

Lady Darnley said: “I am so very grateful to the chairmen and members of Herefordshire Council, representing as they do the people of Herefordshire, for making me an honorary Freewoman of their wonderful county. Being the Lord-Lieutenant was an honour and a privilege. 

“As Her Majesty’s representative, I had the joy of meeting and getting to know and value so many outstanding people across our many communities, who give their time and expertise for the benefit of others. I have enjoyed and benefited from the Council’s generous support for the work of the Lieutenancy, and I highly value this award. 

“I am delighted to accept such a great honour.”

Councillor Roger Phillips, chairman of Herefordshire council, said: “This is the greatest honour we are bale to die on behalf of the county. We make it gladly, in recognition of the wonderful service Lady Darnley has given to Herefordshire over many years.

“She’s dignified in all of her actions, and respected by those who know her and who have worked with her.

“She has helped put Herefordshire on the map and given us cvic pride across the country. it’s fitting that we thank her in this special way.”

Mr Edward Harley CBE, Lord-Lieutenant of Herefordshire, said: “Lady Darnley was Lord-Lieutenant, Her Majesty The Queen’s representative in Herefordshire for 12 years. 

“During that time, she organised numerous royal visits and medal presentations- she also, at all times, promoted and supported activities within the county. 

“I am delighted that Lady Darnley’s service to Herefordshire over many years has been recognised through the bestowal of Honorary Freewoman of the County of Herefordshire.”
