THE speed camera at Lea was experiencing its own notoriety this week as it was named in a national paper's 'speed camera hall of shame.'

Alongside nine other speed camera spots, the Lea camera on the A40 is proving to be very profitable. Together, the ten locations bring in revenue of up to £3 million a year.

Anyone travelling the A40 to Gloucester will be familiar – or surprised – by the fluctuating speed limits, which range from 30mph, to 40mph and 50mph along the route. Several readers have contacted the Gazette about their distress of being caught by the camera. One, who has driven for nearly 30 years with an unblemished driving record, was caught on the camera driving 33mph in the 30mph area. "I accept I was three miles over the limit. Yet the drive along the A40 can be a nightmare with the different speed limits. I am a responsible and careful driver. When I hear about how much money these cameras bring in, I can't help thinking they are targetting the wrong group."

What do you think? Let the Gazette know.
