THE Llangrove and District Gardening Society enjoyed yet another spectacular Flower and Produce Show last weekend.
But despite the extraordinarily hot and dry weather in the run up to the annual show, entries were 10 per cent higher than last year and the quality was excellent too.
The society’s chairman Louisa Brown, thanked all the committee and the many volunteers who had contributed to the show’s success and especially praised the exhibitors who “…despite the challenging summer had demonstrated considerable resilience to deliver such beautiful exhibits.”
She went on to add: “It is such a wonderful village and that is what makes this such a feel-good event.”
A view that seemed to be echoed by the many visitors who clearly enjoyed the home-made cakes and refreshments every bit as much as the many cookery exhibits.
The children’s section, the crafts and the photos illustrated the wealth of creativity being carried out in the district, but it was the beefiest tomato that seemed to prompt most conversation with Catherine Green’s winning entry coming in at a massive 754 grams.
Other category winners at the show were: vegetables: Rachel Lane, Glynys Biggs and Peter Field; flowers: Penny Walshe, Lynette Knowles and Ian Crawford; floral arrangements: Glynys Biggs, Clare Cherry, Amanda Evans and Rachel Lane; cookery: Virginia Haggett and Elaine Joseph.
And the awards for best in show with the highest overall score of 1,300 points was Rachel Lane who won the coveted Llangrove Cup.
The Llangrove and District Gardening Society is a small, friendly club with a varied programme and meets on the first Thursday of every month at 7.30 pm in Llangrove Village Hall,
The society’s next event is on October 1 and features a talk on ‘Unusual Ways to Grow Veg’ by Sue Mabberley from Nant-y-Bedd Garden. All are welcome.
