Better signage would make the safety of a notorious junction safer for all motorists, but especially those without local knowledge it has been claimed this week.

A serious road traffic collision closed the entry and exit slip roads on the M50, J3 for Newent on January 30th after a vehicle left the carriageway. All three emergency services were called and the road was closed for a time to allow for recovery.

Many local residents have spoken out about the junction. Andrew Hotston said: “That’s three times this month! Time to put better warning signs up.”

Vicky Bennett said: “This is happening more and more frequently, almost a weekly occurance.”

MP Jesse Norman told the Ross Gazette: “There is a clear case for a sign to be put up to warn drivers of the turn. I am writing to the Council to see if they can do this.”

However, John Gibbons said: “The problem is drivers do not slow until it is too late, then panic and lock up and slide off the road, it’s not the junction, blame the drivers.”

A Highways England spokesperson told the Gazette: “Safety is always the number one priority for Highways England. We are, therefore, carrying out safety improvements on the M50 between junctions 2 and 4 later this month.

“This work will concentrate on the areas around the slip roads and include the installation of a high friction road surface to improve safety. Existing road markings and signage will be renewed and vegetation cleared to improve visibility.

“We appreciate motorists’ patience while these important works are carried out.”
