OVERALL crime falls across the West Mercia area but serious offences against women continue to rise.

New figures published last week by the Office for National Statistics show a mixed picture for West Mercia Police region, with overall crime continuing to fall while serious offences disproportionately perpetrated by men against women have increased.

Over the 12 months to March 2026, West Mercia recorded sharp rises in stalking and harassment (+11 per cent), and sexual offences (+ eight per cent).

These trends reflect national concerns about violence against women and girls.

Despite this, overall recorded crime in West Mercia has fallen by one per cent, with several high‑volume offences continuing to decline. Notable reductions include: vehicle crime; public order offences; shoplifting; theft offences and burglary.

However, increases were seen in drug offences and miscellaneous crimes against society.

West Mercia’s Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: “These figures show welcome progress in reducing the crimes that most commonly affect people day to day.

“Fewer burglaries, vehicle crimes and theft offences mean fewer victims and safer communities.

“Any rise in serious offences such as sexual offences and stalking and harassment is deeply concerning. Behind every statistic is a victim, and our focus must remain on ensuring people feel safe, supported and able to access the services they need.

“Only the police can respond to reports, investigate thoroughly and bring offenders to justice.

“Continued improvement is essential, and I will keep supporting and challenging the Chief Constable to deliver the strongest possible response.

“My commitment is clear: I will continue to invest in prevention, early intervention and victim support, while ensuring resources are targeted where they are needed most.”
