Madam, The National Farmers Union spokesperson's estimate (page 5, Ross Gazette edition of October 24th) that, if planning is not granted, 150 part time jobs will be lost appears ingenuous.
An intention appears to be to suggest that Herefordshire workers will be denied jobs.
The number quoted relates not to part time but seasonal workers temporarily brought in from outside the UK who pay to live in caravans on site at Pennoxstone Court for the duration of the season. Herefordshire Council's assertion, at the end of the article, that they have enforced notices to ensure compliance is simply untrue. T
here is no sign of enforcement nor compliance by the site to conditions.
David Williams, Kings Caple
MADAM, With regard to the Kings Caple polytunnels, the NFU's claim concerning the possible loss of jobs, should planning permission be refused, is somewhat misleading. The 14 full time workers are all from eastern Europe. Mr Cockburn does not employ locals, and the 150 part time jobs are all filled by migrant workers. Any job losses at Pennoxstone would, therefore, not affect the unemployment figures for the country.
Herefordshire Council's failure to protect the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty was unlawful. The Council ignored the reccomendations of its own Planning Offer, the views of the majority of residents of Kings Caple, and the needs of the tourist industry. I have talked to many tourists who were appalled at what has been inflicted on our village. I hope the Council will now refuse this application.
Miss E M Brooks, Kings Caple
