A GOOD entry of finished cattle continued to meet strong demand throughout the livestock sale in Ross-on-Wye on Monday, March 30.
Auctioneers RG and RB Williams report that steers topped at £2,772 per head, for an entry from Messrs GH & GG Savidge of Dean Common Farm.
Cattle remain keenly sought after by retail buyers, with prices ranging from 360p to 420p per kilogramme.
A smart run of Lim cross heifer from Messrs DE & SJ Cheacker of Ostbridge Manor Farm, sold to 420p per kilogramme on two occasions.
An excellent run of finished steers and heifers from GH & GG Savidge of Dean Common Farm met strong competition selling between 370p and 398p per kilogramme, topping at £2,772.
There were few traditional butcher-type native heifers and steers that sold well between 330p and 350p per kilogramme.
Quality continentals consistently sold between 380p and 420p per kilogramme. All fat cattle averaged today at £2,528.
A nice entry of finished hoggs met another scorching trade, peaking at 424p per kilogramme (£219 per head).
Export hoggs sold very freely between 410p and 424p per kilogramme, meeting keen competition from buyers. Quality exports weighing between 38kg and 43kg realised £165 to £190 per head.
Demand for heavyweight hoggs remained consistent with those weighing in excess of 48kg sold between £200 and £219 per head.
The top venders were D Clothier & Sons Ltd of Shooters Bottom Farm and Gee Partners of Grove Farm.
A good entry of cull ewes and rams met with strong demand with the complete consignment averaging £170 per head. Leaner and smaller-framed ewes sold between £150 and £170.
Stronger sorts of well finished ewes consistently sold between £180 and £220 per head.
The top vendors were J M Godsall & Son of Moor Court and N & I Bevan of Trothlands Farm.
