ROSS-ON-WYE proudly hosted a group from Betzdorf, Germany to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the official twinning between the two towns.

The 30 visitors were warmly welcomed into the homes of Ross residents, where lifelong friendships often begin.

A civic reception at the town’s Bowling Club on Saturday morning, attended by Michael Brenner representing the Mayor of Betzdorf, and included excellent musical performances by both Ross Town Band and the Border Belles Choir.

A formal dinner was held later in the day with speeches from representatives of both town associations, followed by live music from the Glevum Big Band.

Sunday was spent with hosts enjoying local activities, including trips to Highnam Court’s vintage car show, a barge ride through rural Wales, seaside strolls at Penarth, and an excursion on the Dean Forest Railway.

A barbecue hosted by the chairman of the Ross Twinning Association brought many of the group back together for an evening of shared friendship.

One of the highlights was the group trip to Stratford-upon-Avon. Visitors explored Shakespeare’s birthplace and burial site, toured backstage at the RSC, and enjoyed lunch at the theatre’s Rooftop Restaurant.

The visit concluded with a cheerful farewell gathering of wine, cheese, and communal singing, including a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

The Ross-Betzdorf Twinning Association is now looking forward to next year’s return visit to Germany — and is keen to welcome new members. It is a unique opportunity to experience life in another country, staying with local families and enjoying warm hospitality, culture, and fun together.

Dr Lynn O’Driscoll, chairman of the Twinning Association, said: “‘It’s been a whirlwind of a weekend and a really great success for both towns. Old friendships have been renewed and new ones made ensuring the ties that bind our communities together are stronger than ever.’
