A SIX-MONTH-OLD foal which escaped and spent hours running through woods and fields near Ross-on-Wye has been safely reunited with her companions after residents rallied to help find her.

Luna escaped from a trailer near Tank Meadow, close to the top of Penyard Lane, on Saturday (October 3), before making her way into nearby woodland.

An appeal was posted on the Ross-on-Wye Notice Board by Sally Langston, who had been walking her dog when she came across the search.

Residents quickly began reporting sightings while others offered to help Luna’s new owner, Tara Jade Lewis, bring her home.

Luna was located several times but continued running, with Tara saying the foal went over hedges, gates and fences despite leaving behind the half-sister she had grown up with.

By 10.25pm, Luna had returned to the bottom of Tank Meadow, next to the field containing her sister and Tara’s older mare.

Rather than risk opening gates and potentially losing her back into the woods in darkness, Tara left Luna safely in the neighbouring field overnight.

On Sunday morning, Tara confirmed Luna had finally been reunited with the other horses.

She said: “She’s in the field with her sister and my mare. Hoping to keep them quiet and calm as possible.

“They ran the second I got here this morning and trashed some more fencing but they’re safe, somehow not injured. Thank you everyone.”

Tara had earlier thanked the many residents who reported sightings, helped block gaps and tried to guide Luna home during the search.

She said: “I can’t thank everyone enough.

“Honestly, a lot of people today have put my faith back in humanity.”

Despite having horses throughout her life, Tara said she had never known a six-month-old foal behave like Luna, who “just kept going and going”.
