Six war veterans, from the Walking With The Wounded group, are currently undertaking a walk of 1000 miles, over three months, and they will be coming through Herefordshire tomorrow (October 1st), finishing in the city centre. They will restart from the Cathedral on Friday, October 2nd.
There will be a dinner in the evening at The Shire Hall, which is being hosted by the Lord-Lieutenant of Herefordshire and the chairman of the Herefordshire Council, which six walking veterans will be attending and at which they will describe some of their circumstances.
Afghanistan and other recent conflicts have left us a large number of mentally and physically wounded soldiers, whom should never be forgotten. This dinner is Herefordshire’s drive to raise £20,000 as part of a national target of £500,000.
The Walk of Britain expedition has seen six wounded veterans walk over 1,000 miles through mainland UK throughout August, September and October.
The core team of four British wounded veterans and two US wounded will be joined by other wounded personnel each week in different parts of the country. The wounded service personnel all have either physical or cognitive injuries sustained in the line of duty.
The Walk began on August 22nd in Scotland, and it is due to finish in London on November 1st, going via the North East, North West, Wales, Midlands, South West, South East and East Anglia. The veterans will finish at Buckingham Palace.
Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) was established in 2010 to raise funds to finance the re-training of wounded servicemen and women, assisting them in acquiring the skills and qualifications necessary to find new careers outside the military. This enables the blind, the burn victims, the mentally injured, the amputees and all the other wounded to rebuild their lives and return to the work place and in so doing provide long-term security for themselves and their families.
