It’s been an incredibly busy week at Smiths Auction Rooms as staff have been packing up and posting items from the last sale as well as receiving entries for the forthcoming antiques sale on February 28th.

The next sale features a special section for medals and militaria which is always a very popular collecting field and encompasses a wide range of entries. The most sought after items are sets of medals but it also includes swords, guns, uniforms, military equipment and ephemera. An unusual 18th century entry is a Davison’s Nile Medal which was awarded by Nelson to Alexander Davison and all who served under him during the Battle of the Nile in 1798. This example has been hand pierced for wear and despite it’s rather tatty appearance is estimated at £200/£300.

Gentleman’s wrist watches continue to be a very fashionable collecting area at present and an Omega Seamaster watch and an Omega ‘Constellation Electronic Chronometer’ with 9 carat gold strap are bound to do well on the day. Interestingly ladies wrist watches do not perform nearly so well since it seems, whilst men enjoy collecting interesting or stylish vintage watches - ladies generally prefer to buy their watches new from the jewellery shop.

A small collection of 18th century blue and white Worcester porcelain includes two beautiful teapots, a ‘Gilly’ pattern sucrier and cover and an early tiny cream jug painted blue floral sprays. Although not so popular at present these wares could potentially make an excellent investment since their timeless simplicity and high quality surely make them worth a second look. Prices range from around £50 to £200 per item.

The silver section is also shaping up nicely with a high number of entries including a beautiful pair of silver and enamel vestas. One is painted with a small child in a kitchen whilst the other features a woman looking forlornly out to sea – both are painted landscape scenes to the reverse and are sure to be a big draw for collectors.

Smiths will continue to take entries for the sale on February 6th, 11th and 13th, 10am-3pm or by appointment on other days. For further information please telephone 01531 821776 or visit www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk
