There was success for Ross 1st XI when they travelled to Worcester to play Old Vigorians in their last away match of the league season. On Saturday, August 11th, for the second week running, Ross skipper Stuart Mair lost the toss and Ross were asked to bat first. A decision which seemed to be very well justified when after three overs both Ross openers, Tiffen and Evans, were back in the pavilion.

Seb Warwick and Jack Donovan set about rebuilding the Ross innings with intelligent batting. The score had moved on to 74 when Ross lost their third wicket when Donovan (39) was caught off the bowling of old Vigorians captain Azmat Riaz.

Bruno Warwick then joined his brother Seb at the wicket. Maintaining their concentration during some tight bowling by Davison and Riaz, the Warwick brothers continued to build the foundations for a good total for the Ross innings. Seb reached his 50 with a text book cover drive for four.

With the score on 155 Seb was run out for 77. Bruno (33) was the next wicket to fall with the score on 164. Ross continued with a strong batting performance with Adam Mclarty (33) and Christaain Ferreira (19) building a 50 partnership in the closing overs, both batsman remained not out at the end of the innings. Ross finished their 50 overs on 221 for 6.

After a very enjoyable tea Old Vigorians knew that they needed to get off to a good start if they where to be in with a chance of winning this match. In the fifth over Ross claimed their first wicket when Harry Porter had Thompson (6) caught behind by Ed Cinderey. The Old Vigorians batsman of Fiaz and Spring set about building a partnership, and at the first drinks break, they were slightly ahead of the required run rate. Ross knew that they needed to bowl well to bring them back into contention in this match.

The introduction of James Tiffen and Adam Mclarty in to the bowling attack had the desired effect. With runs becoming harder to score and some excellent fielding Old Vigorians started to fall behind the required run rate. Mclarty claimed the next wicket when he clean bowled Spring (41).

Tiffen was bowling well and building pressure at one end, Ferreira was introduced into the bowling attack and in his first over he claimed the wicket of Weston (19) when he was well caught by Bruno Warwick. Tiffen was not be out done and he quickly claimed his first of his three wickets when he bowled Diamond (9) and then quickly followed it up by removing danger man Fiaz (67). Old Vigorians captain Riaz at the crease tried to inject some urgency in to their run rate, only to be caught by Stuart Mair on the boundary off the bowling of Tiffen.

With three overs of the match remaining Ross still needed to claim three wickets. Ferreira then took two wickets in two balls to set up a thrilling final two overs.

In the penultimate over Harry Porter bowled a maiden over. Ferreira then took the ball for the final over of the match, the first four balls of the over were defended well by Baghadi, only for the fifth ball of the over to sneak through his defences to be clean bowled.

The Old Vigorians innings finished on 181 all out. Pick of the Ross bowlers were James Tiffen 17 overs 3 for 37 and Christaain Ferreira 4 for 41. Ross won by 40 runs.

Ross 1st XI final three league matches are at home, starting on Saturday 18th August against Cleobury Mortimer.
