Ross Golf Club's A Team, having missed promotion in 2011 by a whisker, will be aiming to go one step higher in 2012 and Team Captain Neil Lancett will have an interesting mix of golfing talent at his disposal, which bodes particularly well. Some of the Club's talented Juniors squad will again be looking forward to the challenge and personal development, including Juniors Captain, H Butler, J Howells and J Ashdown. The experience of regulars James Morgan and his father, Gwynne, are sure to feature in Neil's mix along with S Wallbank, J Bolton, A Stephens, J Price and those who have represented the Club at this level in recent seasons.
The newcomers in 2012 include two former members of the Monmouthshire GC being M Lawrence, who is part of the new Professional Team at Ross in the care of Head Professional T Hall, and K Crawford who has already made his mark in Club Competitions. Another newcomer, D Gardner is certain to have an impact and Neil will be fortunate in being able to call upon the services of Leighton Walker, the Club's Secretary/Manager who took office in March.
In the Club's opening League match at home to Cleeve Cloud GC, Neil's statement of selecting a strong team with himself as non-playing Captain seemed justified when they recorded a 4.5 pts to 1.5 pts victory. For Ross the points came from 3/2 wins by D Gardner/M Lawrence, J Morgan/H Butler and L Walker/J Howells, a 5/4 win by K Crawford/G Morgan and a halved match result involving S Wallbank/J Price.
Ross B Team also opened their 2012 account with a visit to the notoriously difficult Cleeve Hill GC on the top of Cleeve Hill near Cheltenham, and although they were soundly defeated 5-1, team Captain, C Bennion can take heart that all the matches were closely fought encounters where the end result could have fallen either way. Ultimately it was only a win by C Merriman/M Whitmore 2/1 that was able to influence their team's scoresheet.
Meanwhile Ross Seniors Captain, C Wheatstone and his Seniors squad were in control when their counterparts from Lilley Brook GC were the visitors with the Ross team finishing comfortable winners 6-2. The Ross points came from wins by T Rigden/G Baker 7/5, T Flowers/G Turner 2/1, R Escolme/F Gallagher 1 up, Club Captain N Ovens/B Clouder 3/2, R Nightingale/G Baum 3/1 and P Shaw/D Thrower two up.
