GOODRICH CC 1st XI secured an important Gloucestershire Cricket League Division Five victory on Saturday after chasing down 189 to beat Down Hatherley by three wickets.

The Ross-on-Wye side claimed a deserved 20-point haul thanks to a composed run chase at Down Hatherley, overcoming a testing target with just over 10 overs to spare after dismissing the hosts for 188.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Down Hatherley made a positive start before Goodrich gradually took control with the ball.

Shane Trigg led the resistance for the home side, producing an impressive 73 from 76 deliveries, striking 13 boundaries during his innings. He shared a useful partnership with Chanaka Marasinghe, who added 27, helping the hosts establish a solid platform.

However, Goodrich's bowlers chipped away at regular intervals to prevent Down Hatherley from building a match-defining total.

Matt Young was the pick of the attack, claiming 3-47 from his eight overs as he removed Trigg, Marasinghe and Chris Hill. James Morton provided excellent support with figures of 2-43, dismissing Harry Kent and Jim Stuart, while Alexander Parker also struck twice. Neil Price wrapped up the innings by taking the final two wickets as Down Hatherley were bowled out for 188 in 36.4 overs.

Goodrich's reply began positively through Sean Weller, who made 31 before falling to Jiju Jayakumar.

The visitors' innings was then anchored by James O'Brien, whose superb 79 proved to be the defining knock of the afternoon. O'Brien kept the scoreboard moving throughout his stay at the crease and ensured Goodrich remained on course despite losing wickets at the other end.

Harry Porter departed for two before captain Jack Waldis added seven, while Harry Mutlow contributed 11. Chris Hill briefly raised home hopes with an excellent spell, removing O'Brien, Mutlow and Andrew Brown to finish with figures of 3-9 from three overs.

With the target edging closer, there was still work to do after Matt Young was run out for three, leaving Goodrich seven wickets down.

Wicketkeeper Simon Sharpe remained calm under pressure, finishing unbeaten on 12, while Parker stayed with him until the winning runs were scored. Their partnership guided Goodrich safely to 189-7 from 39.5 overs.

Although Goodrich benefited from 43 extras during the chase, they still needed significant contributions from the top order, with O'Brien's innings providing the foundation for victory.

The visitors also showed patience during the closing stages, refusing to panic despite the loss of late wickets. Their measured approach ensured the required runs continued to come without unnecessary risks, allowing Sharpe and Parker to see the side over the line and complete an impressive away success.

The result earned Goodrich the maximum 20 league points, made up of 10 for the win, five batting points and five bowling points. Down Hatherley collected seven points despite defeat.

The victory continues Goodrich's encouraging Division Five campaign and demonstrated the side's ability to recover from difficult moments with both bat and ball. Restricting the hosts after Trigg's fluent innings proved crucial, while O'Brien's composed knock ensured the visitors made the most of the disciplined work completed in the field.

The win will provide further confidence for Goodrich as they prepare for another important round of league fixtures, with performances from both the bowling attack and batting line-up suggesting the side is building momentum at a key stage of the season.
