A marvelous summer season of competitive golf at Ross Golf Club culminated recently in an enthralling Club Championship Finals Day followed by the Annual Trophy Presentation ceremony to recognise and celebrate with all those who had been winners in major Club events during 2013. Club President Di Honey, Club Captain Phil Wilson and Lady Captain Jeanette Forrester, in making the various presentations, were delighted to also have Brian Huggett in attendance, so that Brian could award his own annual Brian Huggett Trophy deservedly to Ross Juniors Captain, 16 year old Niall Powell, who has enjoyed a remarkable year.
Of all the Championship knock-out finals played on the day, most eyes were on the 36 holes Final to decide the Club's 2013 Men's Club Champion and which featured James Morgan and Tim Wyatt. Tim, who has a 8 handicap, had performed exceptionally well to get to the final stage and having to compete on a scratch basis against the 2 handicap capabilities of James suggested a foregone conclusion of sorts. At the half-way point after 18 holes had been played, this view was substantiated with James having a 6 holes up advantage. However, to his considerable credit Tim fought back tremendously well after their lunch break and although James ultimately won 4/3 it was an exciting match and one worthy of the occasion. A memorable day for the Morgan family as James last won this event in 2010 when his father Gwynne was also Club Seniors Champion, and as Gwynne was recently winner of the 2013 Seniors Championship again, their double/double achievement was duly celebrated in fine style.
