NEWENT Town are on the road to Aldermaston this Saturday in another big FA Vase clash.

The Daffs produced a stunning comeback in the first qualifying round, fighting back from 3-1 down at home to Almondsbury to draw 3-3, before goalkeeper Adam Clark became the hero in a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout win.

And they'll want to at least match last season's success when they made the first round proper of the FA Vase before bowing out at Barnstaple, with the Wessex League One Atom Men standing in their way in the second qualifying round, kick-off 3pm.

They warmed up with a tight Hellenic One match at home to Stroud outfit Brimscombe & Thrupp, but paid the penalty in the 75th minute when the referee pointed to the spot and Ben Saunders converted for a 1-0 win to the visitors, leaving the Daffs 13th in the table.

Ruardean Hill also lost by the same score in the Les James Cup at Henbury & Rockleaze, Kane Mannings sliding in to divert the ball home in the six-yard box from a cross on 22 minutes.

Ruardean went close on 53 minutes when Steve Clark cut in from the left-hand side and his shot looked to be in until Harry Trett pulled off a great save to turn the ball for a corner, which proved to be their best chance.

Elsewhere, Matt Ridler broke the deadlock for Bream Amateurs at home to Huntley in Gloucestershire Northern 2, firing home a 30-yard free-kick.

The visitors levelled through Dan Hall on the hour, but Ridler then posed a question Huntley couldn't answer, teed up from a free-kick eight minutes later to fire what proved to be the winner.

Huntley's divisional rivals Lydbrook Athletic also lost out 2-0 at King's Stanley.

But Howle Hill stormed to a 5-1 win at Weston over Soudley on the opening day of the North Gloucestershire League, James Blackwell, Callum Hall, Kristian Milnes, Joseph Thomas and Sam Thorne their marksmen.

NG Premier tablemates Longhope struggled at Milkwall, going down 4-1 on the end of an Ethan Wilkins hat-trick, with Jack Niedzwiecki firing the consolation.

And Mitcheldean were also beaten 3-0 at home by Westbury United.

But a Lee Morton brace fired Lydbrook 2nds to a 2-0 NG 1 win away to Ruardean Hill 2nds, while Mitcheldean 2nds were celebrating a 3-2 NG2 comeback win at Rank Outsiders after trailing 1-0 at the break.

Newent Town 2nds lost 3-0 at Bartestree in Herefordshire League One, but relaunched Fownhope FC continued their flying start to life in Division 2, hitting hosts Leominster Town Colts for six without reply.

The unbeaten village outfit’s third win in a row followed a 10-2 victory away to Worcester United Development and a 3-0 win away to Tenbury United Colts, which leaves them top of the table.

Meanwhile, Newent Town are organising a coach to their FA Vase match at AFC Aldermaston, leaving Wildsmith Meadow at 11am, price £20. To book see their social media.
