The annual event, set aside by Ross Golf Club to enable its elected President to organise his President’s Prize Day, came full of surprises. Doug Duncanson, in his second ambassadorial year as President, added further spice to the 18 holes stableford competition with members coping with a 75% handicap allowance and pin positions on some of the greens located in testing places.
The end result was a resounding success for the 133 members from all sections of the Club that supported Doug, and it was remarkable, although not entirely surprising that just 35 points proved to be the winning score.
This was achieved by the Club’s current Seniors Champion, Dave Hart, also by longest serving member, Godfrey Farr and Stuart Jones. Count-back decided the outcome and runner-up, Godfrey ultimately attended the prize-giving to receive Dave’s winning prize on his behalf, with Stuart having to settle for third place.
Dinah Johnston was delighted with her highly creditable 34 points to win the ladies prize.
There were nearest the pin prizes for Janet Hyndman’s drive to the par three 7th green and for Paul Warwick, following his pitch to the 13th green in two shots although neither Janet or Paul were able to record a par at their respective holes, reflecting the degree of putting difficulties at large. There was also some recognition for both Derek Hancock and Mathew Humphries in their stand-out achievements of eagle 2’s on the par four 16th hole.
Throughout the evening, 60 members and their wives enjoyed a first-class meal and the company of the classically trained soprano singer, Victoria Wilson, who entertained them to complete Doug’s Day in great style. It was also a special occasion, which Doug acknowledged, for Joanne and Richard Brown being the final event as Club Caterers after four much valued years at the Ross Club. Jo and Richard take with them the members heart-felt thanks and best wishes as they embark upon new careers in the Eastern Counties area.
