Ross Golf Club’s Lady members had plenty of competitive golf to enjoy when the Club’s annual Championship knock-out finals day took place recently.
The top match to decide the name of their 2016 Lady Champion featured 17-year-old Ross Juniors Captain, Sophie Price, who was defending the title she won in 2015. Her rival on the day was Amanda Marshall. Amanda had the incentive to try and reverse the disappointment she suffered two years ago when she was the losing finalist.
With 36 holes ahead of them, playing scratch golf, there was a slight advantage for Sophie, an eight handicapper playing against Amanda, who plays off a handicap of 11.
In the opening 18 holes, Sophie was the first to settle and at lunch she held a clear advantage. After 27 holes it was Sophie who seemed the most likely winner, with a two-hole lead.
However Amanda’s putting began to excel, her overall game strengthened, and this time she was not to be denied. It was Amanda who was able to celebrate her Ross Lady Champion status on the 17th green.
The Ladies Summer Knock-Out Final brought together Sally Fycun, a relative newcomer to the game, who impressively already supports a 15 handicap, enjoying a well matched contest with 16 handicapper Katie Greenwood.
This was reflected in the match being all square after 18 holes, but in winning the first extra hole in a sudden death encounter, it was Sally who emerged the victor.
Sally’s success fully justified the dedication and determination she has shown to continually improve herself within the various coaching and development schemes offered through the Club’s ‘School of Golf’ facilities provided by Head Professional Tim Hall and his team.
The Ladies Bronze Scratch Cup Final brought together another relative newcomer, Mary Smith, who faced former Lady Captain Nesta Hirst.
Mary has been in good form recently and just missed out reaching the Summer Knock-Out Final as well, but she was deservedly able to make it a Champagne occasion this time with a comfortable win.
The Ladies Over 70s Summer Knock-out Final brought together Dinah Johnston and Judith Landau, with Judith aiming to avoid the disappointment she endured two years ago when she was the losing finalist in this event.
This she duly achieved with her consistent play throughout the match. She claimed an 11 shot handicap. This advantage proved just too much for Dinah. Judith’s 2/1 win enabled her to continue her celebrations at the Club’s Trophy Presentation Evening.
